Primary Purpose:
Provide interpreting services for hearing impaired students in a variety of educational settings. Work under the direct supervision of certified hearing impaired teacher.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid Interpreter certification as granted by Board for Evaluation of Interpreters or Registry for Interpreters for the Deaf
Valid Texas educational aide certification
Highly qualified Aide Status
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to work with hearing impaired students
Interprets or translates English into American Sign Language and American Sign Language into English
Travels to daily assignments in a prescribed time frame
Communicates and expresses ideas clearly and concisely through sign language, orally, and in writing
Knowledge of interpreter role and follows the interpreter’s code of ethics
Knowledge of Deaf Culture
Experience:

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
- Interpret in educational settings including classrooms, co-curricular activities, school-related programs and meetings, conferences, staff development, and other situations.
- Attend and interpret Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings as needed.
- Tutor hearing impaired students under the direction of classroom teacher.
- Help maintain administrative records and prepare required reports.
Student Management
- Assist in managing student behavior throughout the school day. The classroom teacher is responsible for discipline of students.)
- Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s communication needs.
- Keep teacher informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
Other
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Participate in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
