Primary Purpose:

Assist in the implementation of a comprehensive program of health services for campuses District wide. Supervises and supports the campus nurse in providing health services to students. Promotes health education and preventive health practices for students. Supervises the RN’s, LVN’s and unlicensed campus health aides within Nacogdoches ISD.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (preferred)
  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
  • Valid Registered Nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas by the Texas State Board of Nursing.
  • Experience as a school nurse
  • Experience with supervision of RN’s and LVN’s
  • Certified trainer by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening
  • CPR/AED Trainer Certification
  • NASN membership

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures
  • Bloodborne Pathogen Trainer
  • Clinic Sub Trainer
  • Non-Licensed Diabetic Care Assistant Trainer

 

Experience:

  • Experience as a school nurse
  • Experience with supervision of RN’s and LVN’s
  • Nursing supervisor experience, preferably in community health


Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Leadership

  • The Nurse Supervisor provides leadership in the practice of school nursing.
  • Works to create and maintain healthy work environments.
  • Displays the ability to define a clear vision, goals and implement district policies and
  • Serves in key roles in the school and community participating on committees and administrative teams.

 

Assessment

  • The Nurse Supervisor collects comprehensive data pertinent to the issue, situation or trend.
  • Completes annual nurse evaluations with Director of Student Support Services and input from the campus principal. 
  • Verifies current license and certifications.

Planning

  • The Nurse Supervisor develops a plan that prescribes strategies and alternatives to attain expected outcomes for the district.
  • AED/CPR/First Aid/Stop the Bleed program – schedules and participates in training teams on each campus, completes monthly equipment checks, and orders supplies.  
  • Oversees vision, hearing, dental and scoliosis screenings. Schedules calendar, arranges assistance of: SFA speech and hearing students, SFA and Angelina student nurses.  Follows up on referrals and completes district state reports.  
  • Texas Vaccines for Children Program: Schedule and attend audits, review findings, provider agreements at vaccine clinics.

 

Resource Utilization

  • The Nurse Supervisor considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, costs and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing services.
  • Budget supplies – inventory and ordering.
  • Oversees/Schedules Audiometer calibration.

 

Collaboration

  • The Nurse Supervisor provides leadership in coordination of multi-disciplinary health care resources.
  • Performs home visits with social worker as needed. 
  • The Nurse Supervisor collaborates with all levels of nursing staff, inter-disciplinary teams, leaders and other stakeholders.
  • Staff Development: In-services planning, presentation and report.
  • Participates in Admission, Review, and Dismissal meetings as required.

 

Research and Development

    • The Nurse Supervisor integrates research findings into practice using the best available evidence to guide practice decisions.
    • Policy/Procedure Manual – periodic review and updating to current best practice.

Training, Health Promotion, Health Teaching

  • The nurse supervisor employs strategies to foster health promotion health, teaching and other educational services.
  • Training for substitute nurses and new nurses to the district. 
  • Trainer for vision/hearing and scoliosis screeners 
  • Trainer for non –licensed diabetic assistant 
  • Allergy/Anaphylaxis awareness 
  • Bloodborne pathogens
  • Puberty lesson for 4th and 5th

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 Direct the work of licensed vocational nurse (LVN) and assigned health clinic aide(s).

Equipment Used:

  Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, thermoscan, AED, basic clinic equipment, personal computer, and copier.

Maintain emotional control under stress. Exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
