Primary Purpose:
Perform major and minor mechanical repairs with minimum supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
One year certificate from an accredited college or technical school; or three years related experience
and or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
Possess or obtain within ninety (90) calendar days of employment a Valid Texas State Vehicle Inspection License.
Possess or obtain within ninety (90) calendar days of employment a Valid Air conditioning/Refrigerant Recycling License.
Successful completion of a twenty hours Region 2 ESC School Bus Driver Safety Training Certification Course within one
hundred and eighty days (180) days of receiving enrollment certificate from Region 7 ESC.
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of diesel and gasoline engine maintenance and repair
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
Ability to access and use printed service materials
Ability to communicate effectively with others
Experience:
3 years of experience as mechanic preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform inspections of vehicles as required by DOT. Perform preventative Maintenance inspections required and specified by manufacturer and departmental standards. Inspections include checks on all systems, oil changes, lube, transmission service, etc.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner with minimal supervision.
- Work with lead mechanic to complete major repairs.
- Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule and maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance.
- Services air conditioning system to include troubleshooting electrical components and installation of complete air conditioning systems on vehicles.
- Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed.
- Inspect and performs complete brake jobs on all District Vehicles.
- Inspect and repairs all wheel chair lifts-electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Record all parts, materials and time to perform repair and services.
- Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and reports any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
- Works with hazardous chemicals and materials in accordance with safety procedures.
- Helps keep shop, equipment and tools in safe clean operating condition.
- May at times serve as an interim supervisor in the absence of the shop supervisor
- Maintains confidentiality of all information.
- Occasionally required to drive other District vehicles as needed.
- Regularly require to safely operate a school bus and transport students to and from school and other designated locations in accordance with Texas code and the Transportation Department Employee Safety and Policy Handbook.
- Report to work on time every day.
- Perform drivability test to insure safe operation of vehicle bodies.
- Do welding and minor body work. Utilizes cutting torch, mig arc welders and power band saw to fabricate and to repair brackets or bracing.
- Assists all District drivers with adjustments on vehicles.
- Travels to a broken down vehicle “on the road”, analyzes the problem and repair if possible or requests a wrecker.
- Communicates status of vehicles to dispatcher over a two-way radio.
- Troubleshoots electrical systems and components using a computerized multi-meter to check for voltage, amps, ohms and current draw. Assign routine preventive maintenance tasks to mechanic helper and inspect completed work for quality.
Safety
- Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
- Keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition and perform preventive maintenance on shop equipment according to established schedules.
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Other
- Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
- Operate buses and other vehicles as needed.
- Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.
