Job Title:  Adaptive Behavior Instructional Aide

Wage/Hour Status:  Nonexempt

Reports to:  Principal and Special Ed Director

Pay Grade:  C&I Aide III

Dept./School:  Assigned Campus

Primary Purpose:

Supervise students assigned to adaptive behavior classroom. Maintain a highly structured and orderly environment. Work under the general supervision of the principal and immediate direction of a certified teacher on a daily basis.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High school diploma or GED

Valid educational aide certification

Highly-Qualified Status as Classroom Aide   Becoming an Educational Aide in Texas/

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to work well with children

Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

Ability to use a personal computer

Demonstrates knowledge of reading, writing, and math

 

Experience:

Experience as classroom aide or 30 semester hours of college credit with an emphasis on child growth and development

Experience with Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (preferred)

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Support

  1. Work with certified teacher and campus administrators to create and maintain an orderly and highly structured classroom environment.
  2. Work with individual students to complete academic assignments given by classroom
  3. Consult classroom teachers regarding student assignments.
  4. Distribute, collect, and check student assignments for accuracy.
  5. Maintain individual files of completed student assignments and return to classroom teacher.
  6. Ensures specific materials and supplies are ready for classroom use.
  7. Alerts teacher of an individual child's special needs or problems.

Student Management

  1. Manage student behavior and administer discipline according to board policies, administrative regulations, and Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  2. Record student attendance and discipline referrals using a personal computer.
  3. Monitors student behavior (e.g., during bus loading, on the playground, in the cafeteria and hallways, and when a teacher is absent from classroom); disciplines students as necessary.
  4. Support staff with physical management of aggressive behavior and verbal de-escalation.
  5. Provides first aid as necessary.
  6. Cleans classrooms or eating areas.

  1. Maintain confidentiality.
  2. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

 

Equipment Used:

Operates classroom equipment such as DVD players, computers, CD players, online resources.

 

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Moderate standing, stooping, bending, and lifting. Physical ability to lift 50 lbs. Able to go from standing to kneeling and back to standing.
