Job Title: Assistant Principal, Elementary

Primary Purpose:

Assist the school principal in the overall administration of the instructional program and operations at the campus level.  Coordinate assigned student activities and services.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Master’s degree in educational administration

Valid Texas teaching certificate

Texas mid-management or other appropriate Texas certificate

Certified instructional appraiser in T-TESS

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Thorough understanding of school administrative operations

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

 

Experience:

Three to five years teaching

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Management

  1. Participates in the development and evaluation of educational programs.
  2. Encourages and supports the development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers to pilot such efforts when appropriate.
  3. Facilitates the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.

School or Department Morale

  2. Deals sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  3. Employs effective interpersonal skills.

School or Department Improvement

  1. Participates in collaborative processes to develop campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.
  2. Assists principal in developing, maintaining, and using appropriate information systems and records necessary for attainment of campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators.
  3. Actively supports the efforts of others to achieve district goals and objectives and campus performance objectives (academic excellence indicators).

Personnel Management

  1. Observes employee performance, records observations, and conducts evaluation conferences with staff; serves as a second appraiser in the Professional Development and Appraisal System.
  2. Assists principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.
  3. Provides effective staff development and training activities by using the mission of the district, program evaluation outcomes, and input from employees and others.

Management of Administrative, Fiscal and Facilities Functions

  1. Supervises operations in the absence of the regular principal.
  2. Assists in the administration of the daily organization of the school including class scheduling, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activities.
  3. Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student attendance and work with the attendance supervisor on investigative follow-up actions.
  4. Requisitions supplies, textbooks, and equipment; conducts inventories; maintains records; and verifies receipts for such material.
  5. Cooperates in the conducting of safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
  6. Coordinates transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
  7. Attends all regular special meetings of the Board of Education and executive or study sessions when requested by the Superintendent.

Student Management

  1. Coordinates and provides adequate supervision of students during non-instructional periods.
  2. Provides input to develop a student management system that results in positive student behavior.
  3. Ensures that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  4. Conducts conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning school and student issues.
  5. Coordinates and provides adequate supervision of student health services.
  6. Ensures that student discipline management, student attendance/truancy, and in-school-suspension/AEP programs are appropriate and equitable for all students.

School or Community Relations

  1. Articulates the school’s mission to the community and solicits its support in realizing the mission.
  2. Demonstrates awareness of school/community needs and initiates activities to meet those identified needs.
  3. Uses appropriate and effective techniques for community and parent involvement.

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Develops professional skills appropriate to job assignment.
  2. Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  3. Monitors professional research and disseminates ideas and information to other professionals.
  4. Adheres to professional ethical standards in relationships with students, teachers, parents, patrons, peers, and support staff.
